Celebrating 40-year impact of Jardine Foundation

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2022, the Jardine Foundation announced two new undergraduate scholarship schemes with the University of Hong Kong and Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia. The new schemes are focused on supporting access to higher education for students from less affluent backgrounds in the communities where we operate.

Supporting Cambodian students
SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022

Launched in 2017, ACLEDA-Jardines Educational Foundation is using proceeds from the sale of Jardines’ interest in ACLEDA Bank to build schools in remote areas to ensure access to primary education for Cambodian children. The construction of eight schools is completed and are managed by the Ministry of Education.

Supporting youth with special needs

Working with local community partners, our Group businesses have provided skills-based training programmes to help underserved members of our communities develop skills to support their livelihoods through job placements. The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong provided internships to students with disabilities; and KFC Hong Kong provided career development opportunities for trainees with special education needs.

Supporting ethnic minorities

Hongkong Land HOME FUND supports youth empowerment and social inclusion. Hactl also actively supports the creation of a more inclusive community in which everyone has equal access to economic, social and educational opportunities. They have developed programmes to support ethnic minorities, developing their Chinese language skills or engaging them in the community.

Nurturing talent for smart construction

Gammon is committed to tackling industry-wide challenges together with local authorities, academics and other stakeholders. Gammon and the Vocational Training Council in Hong Kong jointly designed a new Professional Diploma on Modular Integrated Construction, an innovative construction technology, to nurture future talent for smart construction.

Promoting Health and Wellbeing

The Group has been deeply involved in mental health in Asia through MINDSET Hong Kong and MINDSET Singapore, helping to address this increasingly important social challenge. MINDSET offers job trainings and job placements for mental health persons-in-recovery to support their livelihoods. Our Group companies have also developed physical health programmes to support their communities.

MINDSET Hong Kong 20th anniversary exhibition
SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022

The exhibition, “A Journey of a Thousand Steps”, highlighted key programmes and achievements from MINDSET’s 20-year history. It underscored MINDSET’s mission to support positive change for mental health in the community. The exhibition showcased artwork by beneficiaries of MINDSET’s programmes, and highlights from volunteers in those programmes. The exhibition was also staged in Hactl, Zung Fu, JEC and Gammon’s offices to raise awareness among their colleagues.

Mindbrew, a socially inclusive employment initiative
SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022

Mindbrew was jointly set up by MINDSET Hong Kong and Jardine Restaurant Group in 2020 to empower mental health persons-in-recovery by training them for a potential career as a barista. In 2022, Mindbrew launched its first physical pop-up store in Central, Hong Kong. Over 2,600 customers patronised Mindbrew’s pop-up store and raised more than HK$130,000. It also raised mental health awareness among the public and corporate partners.

Walk Up Jardine House
SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022

The 2022 edition of Walk Up Jardine House raised over HK$3.8 million in support of MINDSET Hong Kong, the highest funds ever raised. Participants competed on step machines, equipped with a digital screen which walked them through MINDSET’s 20-year journey, and educational information on mental health. Almost 3,000 participants accumulated 67 million steps, equivalent to over 70,000 trips up the iconic Jardine House in Hong Kong.

HOME FUND’s furniture project
SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022

In 2022, Hongkong Land HOME FUND partnered with Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The project involved tailoring ergonomically designed furniture, including desks, chairs and auxiliary accessories to 2,000 children living in subdivided flats. This aims to address the children’s health issues such as eyesight and spinal problems, improve their mental health and provide a learning environment.

Astra’s health programmes

By the end of 2022, Astra had funded 3,246 Mother & Child Community Health Centres in Indonesia with 10,595 cadres. Since 2019, Astra has supported adolescent health programmes. In 2022, 213 members delivered information on reproductive health education, mental health, and anti-drug campaigns in over 31 cities.

HOME FUND enhances students’ study environment
SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022

Hongkong Land collaborated with over 12 business partners to improve the facilities of Christian Zheng Sheng Association, rehabilitation centre to help young people in need. The volunteers tackled long-standing issues such as persistent water leaks in the boys’ dormitories and helped remodel its bare-shell kitchen into a fully-functioning one where students could learn to cook. The project was recognised at the RICS Award 2022 as the Corporate Social Responsibility Project of the year.

DFI donates food across Southeast Asia
SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022

DFI is committed to reducing hunger and increasing food security in communities. Over the past two years, DFI has launched several food donation campaigns throughout Southeast Asia, providing the equivalent of more than 17.5 million meals. DFI contributes a percentage of revenue from the sale of its own brand, Meadows Rice, towards feeding those in need.

Astra supports local village development
SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022

Astra has been collaborating with the central government, local governments, universities, communities, start-ups and village communities to develop a rural economy championing local products. The Desa Sejahtera Astra (‘DSA’) programme focuses on assisting villages in marketing their products abroad. Since 2018, Astra has fostered 1,060 DSAs and encouraged exports of products from 290 villages with a total valuation of Rp68 billion.
